Your Request You asked for VISION REQUIREMENTS TO ACQUIRE FLYING LICENSES. Response to Request Your FOI request is approved. Per the Office of the Flight Surgeon & Aviation Medicine (OFSAM), to become a commercial/airline pilot, the regulation requires an applicant to be a holder of Class I Aviation Medical Certificate. There's no limit for Error of Refraction and an aspirant may still be allowed provided it is corrected to 20/20 vision on each eye with corrective lenses. However, those with high refractive error will have to undergo a full ophthalmologic examination and evaluation. Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA) is not applicable in cases of not meeting the visual acuity requirement of the regulation. Class I Aviation Medical requires a normal color vision. SODA may be considered depending on the evaluation and the result of the color vision assessment of the Authority. The regulation allows color vision deficiency for Class II Aviation Medical with daytime flying limitation.
