Good day!
The Covid-19 pandemic have suddenly prompted schools to shift to a digital mode of learning and both students and teachers alike had no choice but to comply to this due to their fear of being endangered by the virus.
The sudden change in how learning is done brought multiple challenges and hurdles to the field and the sudden shift to a new mode of learning, which is virtual/digital, posed an additional issue. This issue mostly affected the public schools in the country because of their lesser budget than that of private schools, who are more capable when it comes to budgets and funds, and so, public schools are the ones who were not able to afford the technological materials to use for virtual learning. Instead, they relied on the use of lesson modules provided by the Department of Education (DepEd) in order to comply with the new mode of learning even without the use of technological materials. Private schools, on the other hand, are no longer receiving much financial support from the government. Those that cannot adapt due to lack of funding had no choice but to cease operations due to the lack of enrollments. In September 2020, the Department of Education (DepEd) reported that 865 private schools have closed down due to the pandemic.
We want to research whether or not this sudden shift to the virtual mode of learning prompted students to not enroll for the current school year and whether or not this was able to help teachers or did it become the cause of them being currently unemployed.
With that stated, we are requesting the following information maintained and kept by the Department of Education in relation to the enrollment of students in the secondary level (High School) and the employment of teachers in the public schools in Quezon City.
1. Number of Students enrolled in each public and private high school in Quezon City during the academic years: 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021
2. Number of Teachers employed in each public and private high school in Quezon City during the academic years: 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021
3. Number of Teachers laid-off in each public and private high school in Quezon City during the academic year 2020-2021
The data being requested will mainly be used for research and reporting purposes only and will only be utilized in the production of a preliminary paper that will be submitted as part of our Data Journalism course that is facilitated by Ms. Karol Ilagan. Should you have any query about this request, do not hesitate to contact Ms. Ilagan at 0956-526-4714.
The said preliminary paper is only for academic purposes and would not be published on social media or any public platform and it would only be read by our facilitator.
Thank you and have a good day!
