ALINA Student, Master of Arts in Physics Education Bicol University Graduate School ABSTRACT "DEVELOPING AN ANDROID-BASED MOBILE APPLICATION AS A TOOL FOR ENHANCING THE PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS IN GRADE 10 PHYSICS " Eric D. Alina Thesis Proposal College of Education Graduate School Bicol University This research study is set to develop an Android-based mobile application with guided discovery learning (GDL) as a tool for enhancing the problem-solving skills in Grade 10 Physics. The decision to conduct the study was compelled by the results of international assessments such as of PISA 2018 wherein 15-year old Filipino learners ranked second to the lowest in science among all participating countries in OECD. The result categorized them as “Level One: Weak or Emergent Problem Solvers” (OECD, 2018). The popularity of educational mobile applications promise a limitless potential of improving learners’ cognitive skills and problem-solving skills, which could directly or indirectly address the learners’ problem-solving difficulties. The study aims to answer the following: (1) the characteristics of Grade 10 learners prior to the use of developed mobile application in terms of (a) digital literacy and mobile learning readiness and (b) level of problem-solving skills in Physics; (2) the features and components of the mobile application to be developed in terms of (a) built-in technical tools, (b) content, (c) problem-solving strategies and guided discovery elements; (3) the learning experiences of learners on using the mobile application with GDL; (4) the significant relationship between the learners’ acceptance of the mobile application and their level of problem-solving skills in Physics; and (5) the level of effectiveness of the mobile application as a tool for enhancing the problem-solving skills of the learners in Physics. The results of this study aim to contribute to the pool of knowledge about how technology and data can improve learning process and how it can help the K+12 curriculum in the Philippines.
