Subject: Request for record of Public High School Philippine History Textbooks from 1906-2000
Dear Department of Education,
This is a request under Executive Order No.2 on Freedom of Information. I hereby request a copy of the following record: Philippine History Textbooks used in Public High Schools from 1906-2000, including the title of the textbook and the author of the textbook, the date it was published, and the date it was used in public high schools.
The purpose of this study is to examine the representation of women in Philippine history textbooks. This study seeks to recognize the exclusion and absence of women in the narrative of the country’s history in textbooks and to look for the reasons why such silences persist. Attached here is a short abstract of the study:
Abstract
As tools for education, textbooks mold the minds of the students. Moreover, schoolbooks are great primary sources for analyses of social representation, particularly, gender representation. This paper seeks to examine the representation of women in Philippine history textbooks and to contribute to the study of women’s invisibility in history. Through an examination of important topics in history such as – political affairs, social life, colonial period, revolutionary times, education, rights movement, reform movements, labor, and wars – this paper seeks to detect the aspects of women’s history that have been most neglected in Philippine history textbooks. The paper concludes with an examination of the effects of socio-political conditions on textbook writing and an analysis of the changes in the representation of women in Philippine history textbooks through time.
The intended output of this study is a senior research paper to be submitted to the Department of History, University of the Philippines Diliman by the end of April as a requirement for graduation.
I look forward to receiving your response. Thank you for your consideration of this request.
Sincerely,
Jaleen Dela Cruz.
