ABSTRACT
Early childhood development is a crucial stage in a human’s lifetime, for this period shapes the foundation of a child’s potentials that eventually would affect his/her growth and development until adulthood. Fundamental factors such as biological and environmental factors may vary in terms of the effect on the improvement of a child’s capacity to develop depending on the approach as well the innate state of the child. For children with disabilities and developmental delays or disorders, it is important to organize a specific approach that would respond to their special needs. This involves the careful consideration of designing the programs as well as the spaces in which the child would be introduced and nurtured in a stimulating and secure environment.
This research aims to discuss the possible programs and interventions for children with developmental disorders through the design of environment and spaces. This includes the design of educational and treatment centers, as well as research and vocational facilities for families who raise children with developmental disorders. The study is presented with topics that consists of: early interventions and programs at home and at school for children with developmental disorders; the present condition of inclusive and special education programs in the Philippines including its issues, advantages and potential improvement; and the role and importance of people and children with disabilities based on the society’s perspective.
In order to determine and formulate efficient suggestions and solutions through design, the study followed a structure including participant observation, interview, and survey involving families, teachers, advocates, specialists and doctors who are directly related with children with developmental disorders. Given the different considerations, the goal of this research paper is to improve the lives of children with disabilities with regards to their lifestyle, education, and interaction with their society.
