ABSTRACT OF NATIONAL SPECIAL EDUCATION (SPED) CENTER FOR
CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME AND AUTISM
With the increasing number of children with Down syndrome and Autism, the lack of specialized facilities made especially for them, the social stigma that is built around them, the outdated design of a typical SPED Centers and as a preparation for an inclusive education, a National Special Education (SPED) Center for Children with Down syndrome and Autism is proposed.
The proposal is a combination of an early intervention facility, a center for early childhood special education, and a training center for the future educators of the children. Early intervention refers to the delivery of a coordinated and comprehensive set of specialized supports and services to infants and toddlers (birth through age two) with developmental delays or at-risk conditions and their families. Its purpose is to minimize the impact or effect of a disability and prevent the occurrence of future learning and developmental difficulties in children considered to be at risk. (Guralnick, 2007) On the other hand, early childhood special education is about the provision of customized services uniquely crafted to meet the individual needs of young children three to eight years of age with disabilities. Early childhood special education is a system of supports and services for young children with disabilities. (Gargiulo, 2009)
Children with disabilities in the center-based programs receive intervention from professionals representing a variety of disciplines such as physical and occupational therapists or speech-language pathologists. The primary direct service provider for preschoolers with disabilities is frequently the child’s teacher. Center-based programs typically stress the acquisition of developmental, social, cognitive, and self-help skills necessary for success in elementary school. (Hooper & Umanski, 2009)
Human learning is primarily based on experiences gained in interacting with the environment. The environment is constantly sending messages to children. If a child finds an experience pleasurable, he or she will seek to return to the conditions that provided that sensation. If an individual experiences discomfort or failure, however, that person typically will avoid the circumstances associated with that experience. In a sense, we become what we experience. (Gargiulo & Kilgo, 2011)
In providing an environment that promotes growth, development, and learning of children with variable abilities and needs, the design approaches to this proposal are interactive and therapeutic that will focus on interior spaces.
According to Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, interactive means people working together and having an influence on each other while therapeutic means having a good effect on the body or mind; contributing to a sense of well-being.
