Specifically, the study aims to show and analyze trends of tax share in GDP in the Philippines and examine the long run effect of the determinants of tax share in GDP in the Philippines.

TIME SERIES DATA ANALYSIS ON THE DETERMINANTS
OF TAX RATIO IN THE PHILIPPINES
(1959-2019)
Abstract
The Philippines has been facing budget deficit and public debt in the past decade. This persistent budget deficit could be explained by insufficient tax revenue despite efforts of the government to increase it through tax reforms. For this, the study aimed to determine the variables that significantly affects the ratio of tax revenue to GDP (TAX/GDP). To attain the objective, time series data were collected from International Monetary Fund, and World Bank. Data collected was from the year 1959 to 2019 and was used in the estimation of Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) through regression model. Results indicated that institutional variables such as political stability and corruption level, and economic variables such as GDP per capita are highly significant while demographic variables such as elderly population are insignificant. Furthermore, the study recommends the policy makers like senators to craft laws that can control or reduce the corruption in the country as a complement to the tax reforms.
