Response to Request
Here is the range of net heat rate per plant type based on data available.
Coal - 10,200 to 12,200 BTU/kWH
Oil-based - 8,600 to 13,500 BTU/kWh
Natural Gas - 6,900 to 10,100 BTU/kWh
Biomass - 14,200 to 22,300 BTU/kWh
Source: DOE based on available data gathered from the submission of Power Plants' Operations Report
*Geothermal, Hydro, Wind and Solar have no heat rate for they do not consume fuel to produce energy
