Dissertation Title:
The spatial elements of public streets as makeshift outdoor playgrounds that impact the play experiences of out-of-school children and youth in the Philippines
Background:
Many Filipino families residing in provinces are challenged to a greater extent because child and youth development programs there are predominant of its service inequality and scarcity. Their children are denied access to education, are vulnerable to malnutrition — both mainly due to poverty — and needs a financial option for positive development.
Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority's 2016 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey (APIS), approximately four (4) million or one (1) in every ten (10) Filipino children and youth was out-of-school in 2016. OSCY females were recorded significant than males — predominantly sixteen (16) to twenty-four (24) years old — due to three main (3) reasons such as (i) marriage or family matters, (ii) insufficient family income, and (iii) lack of personal interest.
Although children and youth are different age groups, studies indicate that play experiences affect children's and youth's four (4) fundamental domains of development: (a) physical, (b) cognitive, (c) social, and (d) emotional development. Through play — the combination of social interaction and physical activities — children learn from vital learning experiences suchlike (i) socialization, (ii) cooperation, and (iii) conflict resolution, while, adolescents (i) improve their language skills and (ii) develop small and large motor skills. These group of individuals will exhibit differences in their development and will vary according to the environment, settings of their upbringing, and vital factors suchlike social interaction, natural environment, and the built environment.
Notwithstanding, these two (2) age groups are further divided into three (3) distinct categories. (A) Elementary school children aging from five (5) to eight (8) are generally those who just transitioned from pre-school to middle childhood; (B) Early adolescents aging from nine (9) to twelve (12) are mainly those who experience growth spurt, evident bodily changes, and severe emotional disturbances; (C) Adolescents or youngsters aging from thirteen (13) to fifteen (15) are mostly those who approach adulthood;

Department of Education
To whom it may concern,
I, Warlito M. Despabiladero, a student from Mapúa University (formerly Mapúa Institute of Technology) and currently taking up B.S. Architecture, would like to request your kind assistance for data gathering on my thesis entitled: “The spatial elements of public streets as makeshift outdoor playgrounds that impact the play experiences of out-of-school children and youth in the Philippines”
My thesis involves identifying which features of outdoor play areas affect the play experiences of children, out-of-school children, youth, and out-of-school youth (i.e., use of public roads as play area, landscapes as play area, lack of shade, lack of playgrounds within the community). As part of my research, I would like to kindly request for an interview regarding my topic.
To find the commonality between two (2) typologies in order to propose an Out-of-School Learning Center, which is a mixed-building typology of an educational development center, I would like to ask for the following:
1. Site Criteria for Children's Playgrounds
2. Site Criteria for Elementary Schools
Rest assured that all data gathered are solely for academic purposes and will be handled with utmost confidentiality. Any extended assistance in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your kind consideration and for any generous assistance you may offer.
Very truly yours,
