Good day!
I am Geraldine E. Asis. I'm currently taking up my Master's Degree in Special Education in Cebu Normal University. I am asking assistance from your good office to provide information for my research paper. The focus of my work is to provide a profile of SPED teachers in the Philippines. It will include the number of employed SPED teachers in the country.
My research paper is still a work in progress and I don't have any other document to present, only the draft of the rationale of my work. The aim of my study is to understand why a lot of SPED Teachers left to work abroad. One factor that I am looking at is the number of available job nationwide ever since SPED started in the country.
I will need the following information:
1. The number of SPED teacher applicants from 1988 to present.
2. The number of SPED teachers that were hired from 1988 to present.
3. The number of SPED teachers that resigned in the public schools from 1988 to present
Thank you!
Respectfully,
Geraldine E. Asis

Rationale
"A course that is in demand abroad."
This is how most people describe the degree in special education. It is as if ones ticket to get a good paying job and earn more overseas. Though it seems great but do people really understand what it takes to become a special education teacher? Are they even aware how to handle children with different special needs and personalities? How these teachers give extra care and attention to everyone all at once inside the classroom? It sounds difficult or impossible for other people but this is how a special education teacher is expected to perform in class. This is regardless of what type of special students they handle, availability of resources, size of class, classroom environment and with the added tasks given to them.
Choosing this topic about SPED teachers flying abroad is timely since we hear news about job opportunities abroad where they earn more compared to what they earn in our schools. The aim here is to know a brief history about when did it started that Filipino SPED teachers go abroad to teach. The number of SPED teachers hired in the country versus the number of SPED teachers deployed abroad. Their reasons for trading their job to go overseas. To get a better understanding about what can be done so that our SPED teachers will choose to stay and be with our special children. To get their sentiments on what they wish to see in our schools that could have made them keep their posts.
The present trend today is that schools abroad offer teaching opportunities for Filipino SPED teachers. A lot of Filipino Sped teachers left our schools just to grab these opportunities. These teachers are not fresh graduates with zero experience. They are the teachers with years of experience, board exam topnotchers, masteral or doctorate degree holders and trainers. They are what we consider as the crème of the crop. That is why it is such a waste losing these type of teachers. They can contribute a lot to our schools and help make a difference with the lives of our special children through their expertise. Before we run out of competent SPED teachers why don’t we try to understand the reason behind their choice and see what we can do to avoid facing possible SPED teacher shortage in the future.
