Sir/ Madam:
Greetings of Peace!
I am currently enrolled in the Graduate School of the Br. Andrew College of Education, De La Salle University - Manila taking up Doctor of Science Education and presently conducting a study entitled “Personal and Professional characteristics, Beliefs, and Teaching Practices of Outstanding Mathematics Teachers: A Collective Case Study” in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Science Education (Mathematics).
In this regard, I would like to ask a favorable request about the mathematics NAT result of Fourth year students from 2010 to 2018. Consequently, I would like to further request that only NAT results of the following divisions namely, Iloilo province and city, Passi City, Aklan, and Antique.
This request was further made due to the reason that the present study was planned to be conducted at the Panay Island, Region VI, Western Visayas, Philippines. The said data will be used in the discussion on the performance of students in the Panay Island, as per advice by the panel members during the proposal defense.
Data received through your facilitation will be a big help in the fulfilment of the present study. Attached herewith is the panel’s report during the proposal defense and the data gathering procedure of the present study.
Your positive response regarding my request will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for your favorable action on this request.
Very truly yours,
SGD DANILO M. PARREÑO
DSED-MATH Student
Panel’s Report
Proposed Research Study:
Personal and Professional Characteristics, Beliefs, and Practices of Outstanding Mathematics Teachers: A Collective Case Study
Student researcher: Danilo M. Parreño (DSED- Mathematics)
Proposal defense date: March 25, 2019
Consolidated panel’s comments and suggestions:
1. Define outstanding teacher operationally in your study. How do you differentiate them from effective teachers?
2. Research question should reflect the goal of the study which is to find out if the outstanding teacher is effective in class.
3. Sequence of discussion in the introduction should clarify the study’s goal.
4. Minimize literature review on effective teaching. Focus on criteria for outstanding teacher.
5. Emphasize the social context or cultural context of being outstanding. Describe the locale more extensively.
6. Why is your design the best for this study? Describe.
7. Specify data that would be triangulated.
8. Include section on instrumentation, “scoring”.
9. Topic duration should be indicated in every checklist.
10. Update checklists with one idea per item. Make sure all items reflect observable behaviour.
11. Some items contain complex ideas. Transfer these items to interviews. Simplify others.
12. Revisit the interview protocol (e.g. what do you think are your qualities…)
13. Group your items according to the domains of PPST.
14. Follow APA format in writing the dissertation.
Verdict: Proposed research study accepted

Data Gathering Procedure
Data will be collected during three semi-structured interviews and six plus consecutive classroom observations of each teacher using an interview protocol, observation protocol, classroom observation checklist and, field notes.
Data will be collected on the third term of school year 2018-2019 to the first term of school year 2019-2020. A letter request of permission will be secured from the office of the Department of Education regional directors office, office of the school’s division superintendents and office of the education program supervisor in mathematics, office of the mathematics division where participants accepted the said research study (see appendix F). A consent form with a letter of gratitude explaining the purpose and goal of the study will be secured from the participants as proof of their approval to voluntarily be part of the study (see Appendix G).
The multiple sources of data include interviews, observations, classroom observation checklist and researcher’s reflection notes. The interviews will be conducted after every two or three observations to ask questions for clarifications in the interpretations and to better understand the participant’s intentions and thinking about situations and events. The teaching beliefs and practices questionnaire will be administered after the first interview. The second and third interview protocol will be based on the third and fourth observation and after the administration of the teaching beliefs and practices questionnaire.
Data collection process will be made to maximize the potential of understanding the complexities of the case. Each participant’s will be scheduled on their preferred two weeks’ time, to give them time to prepare and reflect on their mathematics teaching practices.
The data will be collected from each participant solely and this will occur in succession throughout the scheduled term of the school year 2018-2020.
Data will be briefly analyzed using constant comparison all throughout the collection process to guide my focus and attention of future interviews and observations. Data analyzed through the succession of the research will be considered partial and will be used in the succeeding conduct of the research. Interviews will be audio recorded and observations will be video recorded. Multiple data source is used for triangulation purposes.
