To whom it may concern,
Warmest Greetings! I, the undersigned, am writing to you as a fourth-year BS Architecture student from Mapua University, Intramuros, Manila. For this term, I am taking up Architectural Thesis II and I would like to ask for your guidance and support in data gathering for my thesis proposal: “A Study on Social Activity Patterns of the Visually Impaired within Learning Spaces” which it aims to improve the way finding of the blind students.
With this in mind, I would like to kindly request for the following information/data:
▪ Regional Statistics of the Visually Impaired in the Philippines in the years 2015-2019
▪ Region and Province(s) with the most population of persons with Visual Impairment (of which includes: totally blind, partially blind, light perception, color blind, etc.)
▪ Any other related information
This data will help me expand my understanding to the activity patterns of the visually impaired in developing architectural solutions for a proposed Specialized Learning Spaces for the Visually Impaired. Your kind assistance in guiding and providing the necessary data would not only mean the support for my proposal but would also mean the support to develop accessibility in schools for the Visually impaired. Moreover, your response will be very much appreciated. Rest assured that any information and data your office can provide shall be treated with utmost confidentiality and will be for academic purposes only.
Here is the Abstract of my proposal as per requested:
ABSTRACT
Education is one of the most vital tools growing up to any individual to live a successful and fitting life. It is because of proper education that an individual gain different job opportunity and develop their abilities in their forte and this would only be possible if their environment promotes productivity. It is not unfamiliar to any individual to have their standards met through proper spatial planning in scholastic spaces because it is a requirement to cater these needs but since not everyone is fortunate enough to be born without any physical deficiencies, a specialized and much complex planning and designing is a challenge that every designer faces to give equal consideration to people with disabilities.
This study is aimed to contribute to better understanding and identifying the activity pattern of those with visual impairments to help in planning and designing specialized learning spaces with great consideration to accessibility and way finding. In addition, the research focuses on all the distinct senses that a visually impaired may use as an alternative for their sense of vision in way finding so that their movement may be decreased in restriction and make their travel and social interaction easier within the environment. These senses of vision (for the partially blind), touch, smell, and hearing that are essential tool for the blind in navigating their location may be considered in the application of architectural elements in such a way that could be translated into lighting, texture, scent, and acoustic.
Thank you for your kind consideration!
Sincerely,
PRINCESS J. PASCUAL
