Sorry for the late reply, but here is the Introduction of my undergrad thesis. although I don't know how can I attached my id file here.
Title: PAGDUNONG KAHDUWA: A Proposed Therapeutic Specialized School for Children with Psychiatric Conditions
Introduction:
One in five Filipinos encounters mental illness. A mental or psychiatric illness diagnosed by a mental health professional is a psychological condition that significantly disturbs your thought, moods, and behavior and seriously increases its risk of injury, pain, death, or loss of freedom. Many various psychiatric illnesses are involved. In general, they are characterized by a combination of odd thoughts, feeling of perception, behavior, and relationship with others. The major categories of psychiatric conditions are depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychoses, and dementia. The information given demonstrates that mental health problems are popular everywhere. The 792 million people have been dealing with mental wellbeing is slightly more than one in 10 people worldwide.
People with psychiatric/mental health disorders experience a significant disturbance in mental functioning. In December 2015, Buzzfeed Video conducted interviews entitled “Living with a Mental Disorder” and these are the answers of some explaining their experiences. “It's like trying to do something, like when there's no gas in the tank, attempting to start a vehicle. You just want things to be done, but you don't have the means. It felt heavy, like a bolder one, a giant weight. It starts out the as small stuff, then it grows a little bigger and bigger before you eat it all. It is also like those tiny bubbles that keep pressing on me, packed with stuff that might go wrong. All the things that could go wrong are irrational for a normal person, but the worst things in the world are those things that could go wrong with mental illness. This is often an irrational thought, but it keeps bugging them.” These are some of the things that a person who suffers from psychiatric illness experience.
They have no self-control. Since this disorder affects them and takes over their thoughts, they do not know who they really are. Those minimal problems to others are much bigger for someone with these disorders. You cannot really determine a person suffering from mental illness by just looking at them. Since they have no control over their thoughts, behavior, and moods it’s difficult for them to cope up in a normal class setting. They urge to struggle because some of them also suffer from hallucinations, delusions, unwanted thoughts, and so on. They have difficulty learning at a normal pace.
“The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you,” said B.B. King, a professional songwriter. Education is the foundation upon which we build for our own future. All of us have the same opportunity to build our own future.
We all have the right to gain an education, same goes for persons with special needs. The Constitution of 1987 guarantees every Filipino's right to education. It provides that, “The State shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to make education accessible to all.” Children with special needs include who is gifted with advanced knowledge and skills on one hand, and the physically mentally impaired and handicapped persons on the other hand. “Students with disabilities are discouraged since they see themselves as incompetent in many aspects of education. As a result, they usually become unmotivated to read, write, and do activities in fear of failure.” (Irvin, Melzer & Dukes, 2007). They need special education and training different from those given to ordinary children. They need special programs that would further enhance their usual mental and physical capabilities to make these beneficial to them. Occupational and physical therapy rooms, speech laboratory, life skills laboratory, and sensory rooms are usually added to the school for their support in physical, mental, and other disabilities. They are offered special education and programs in such a way they can improve their capabilities, yet it is not enough to cater and focus on the specific illness. Many SPED schools in the country cater to students with disabilities but educational programs for mental disabilities are few, usually, these programs are for learning, communication, and developmental disabilities.
And so, in response to the issue mentioned above, this study aims to develop a specialized learning center that offers a therapeutic environment.
