ABSTRACT
The built environment influences and has an impact on the users’ emotional and physical experience, this may be a positive or negative impact. For individuals with Down syndrome, they experience or perceive their space differently in which has a direct impact on their architectural environment and spaces. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the built environment factors that affect the learning interest, socialization, and engagement of students with Down syndrome. This also focuses on the users’ perception of their current built environment, mainly to address and improve inclusivity. To gather the factors and the students’ perception of their built environment a qualitative survey was conducted with the Down syndrome students, to support the data gathered and interview and observation was also conducted. The following are interaction, comfort, safety, lighting, noise, accessibility, color and ventilation. To develop an inclusive built environment, the intended project will be a redevelopment of an elementary school, catering to both students with or without a disability.
