ABSTRACT
The Philippines' geography makes it very vulnerable to various kinds of calamities. The Philippines is located in the typhoon belt of the Pacific. Being surrounded by bodies of water makes it prone to tropical cyclones which generally produce heavy rains and flooding of large areas and also strong winds which result in heavy casualties to human life and destructions to crops and properties. The researchers chose Brgy. Macatoc, Victoria Ortiental Mindoro for it is surrounded by rivers and the community are experiencing floods when heavy rains fall.
The existing Evacuation Center in the school of the said Barangay is in bad condition and too small to accommodate more than 10 families. Building a permanent Shelter during and after the typhoon should be sought to guarantee the evacuees’ safety, promote their social well-being, and guard their welfare while they recover and rebuild their homes and their lives. The proposed Evacuation Center will be located in an accessible area with higher elevation to avoid flood, far from coast to avoid the storm surge and away from landslide prone area.
The scope of the proposal mainly focuses on designing and planning of a typhoon resistant, specifically a shelter with resistance to flood and extreme winds. The building will be used as an evacuation center in times of typhoon. The parameters the researchers will use are wind resistance and flood resistance to be assessed through Related Literatures and principles of design, and cost efficiency and building capacity to be evaluate through estimation and calculation. Lastly, the design of the study will be descriptive-comparative. The comparison will be between the existing Evacuation Center in Brgy. Macatoc, Victoria, Oriental Mindoro and the proposed Evacuation Center which will focus on the mentioned parameters.
