Hi! I would like to request information about the following: 1. How many hectares of cotton farms are active as of today in the Philippines? (If there's no exact answer, an approximate would do) 2. Is there a decline in the cotton industry within the decade? (if it's thriving, is there still at least a decline) 3. If there is a decline in the cotton industry, what are the reasons for it? 4. Does the cotton industry need more aid? Such as, is there a need for more cotton farms? 5. What are your thoughts on indoor cotton farms?

Thank you for your request dated Dec. 1, 2024, made under Executive Order No. 2 (s. 2016) on Freedom of Information in the Executive Branch.

You have requested State of Cotton farming.

I am pleased to inform you that your FOI request has been approved.

  1. For question number 1, kindly refer to the following data regarding the current status of planted cotton: [Seedcotton Production and Cotton Area Planted line graphs - Sent to your email]
  2. The above statistics provide the relevant information.
  3. The decline in planted areas and harvested seedcotton can be attributed to the following factors: Pest infestations, and environmental challenges such as climate change, wherein harvesting coincides with the rainy season.
    These issues have significantly impacted efforts to stabilize and sustain seedcotton production. 
  4. To address these challenges, PhilFIDA provides the following interventions: Production and extension support for cotton farmers, like agricultural inputs. 
  5. Indoor cotton farming has potential, especially for mitigating climate risks, pest control, and enabling year-round production. However, its high costs, energy demands, and the spatial needs of cotton plants make it economically and practically challenging for large-scale adoption.
